My one and only time ice fishing was over 20 years ago. I caught 50 lbs of ice and a 24 hour hangover.

Seems like your good to go in the rod department?? Do you mean line? if so use a braid, I use spider wire and don't even bother using a leader.

No worries, I don't think it matters, I know people who just use line and a 1x2 and land all sorts of fish in fact thats all I used to use. A rod and reel is gravy.

I used a single action reel out salmon fishing a couple weeks ago. I like the feel of it and the action you get when you use light weight line and run very little drag. It makes for more of a challenge bringing the fish in. The added bonus is that it's a relatively cheep setup as well. Is there enough ice at lake of the woods already?

Not exactly. Just not while frozen solid
OK, so the time I went, supposedly they were just killing the perch and walleye. We rented a shanty owned by the bait shop where they drive you out to it, literally almost a "guided tour". We get to the bait shop at O'dark:thirty, buy our bait and rigging mods and our, uh, beverages all from this guy. We fish and freeze until it's dark again when they finally come to get us.
How'd ya' do? The grinning idiot asks us. NOT WORTH A FLYIN'! we say. We got 1 fish, so po'ed at the end of the day we threw him back down the hole. "Well, what did you use? How did yo fish it? We tell him. . ."Oh, you don't do it like that, you use this bait, rig it like this, fish it like this .. .NOW YOU TELL US, A&&@*^E!
So, now you know

Couldn't agree more it's just at the time the guy who taught me to ice fish was over 90 so that's the way we did it.
