 JD 4830 glitchy
« Thread Started on Nov 7, 2009, 8:07am »

We have a JD 4830 (bought Oct 07). And have had nothing but problems with it. I was just wondering if anyone else is seeing this or if we just have a lemon.

1) The booms, specifically the ends, keep breaking out. Nothing has been able to fix this. This winter we are thinking of bringing it into our shop to make our own ends.

2) Boom Trac is very unreliable. We have had the tech out several times and they can't seem to track it down. It just wasn't working correctly. He replaced several sensors (not cheap) and did a software update. But you still have to watch the booms like a hawk, even on flat ground they might go crazy and slap the ground.

3) We keep getting a message "Uncommanded WAS motion." We have replaced both wheel angle sensors and had the tech check all connections. When this error appears it will not log in the error code screen. You have to restart the screen to get the autosteer to work but other than the first warning popping up there is no evidence in the code log that anything happened. The tech doesn't know what to do.

4) All of the flange seals and hoses are EPDM and started leaking badly literally 1 week after the full warranty expired. RDO refused to do anything about it except say that JD put the wrong hoses and seals in the early machines. This was after we had to prove to them there actually was a problem. We had to take everything apart and replace it with Viton seals and hoses.

Frankly we've had it. All that RDO and John Deere have done is point fingers at each other and Goodyear who made the hose. We have been green since the 1930's but those days are over. Just changed the tractor over to a CIH, other things to follow. Has anyone else had any of these problems, or were they limited to early serial numbers. Our deal, of course, says that company wide they have NEVER seen any of this stuff in the hundreds of sprayers they have sold. I think not.

I am not a fan of the red tractors but I think they have the sprayers figured out.

I think Deere has a problem on the new sprayers, we have several guys here with them and they are having most of the same issues you are. Then the Deere dealer doesn't have experience to fix it on top of that. One customer talks to Deere company service alomost daily trying to figure out the electrical gremlins.

Maybe the new ones have some of the issues fixed, I don't know.

We bought a 4830 when they came out and this year was our 2nd with it. Only problems we've had are number 1 and 2 on your list. However, problem number 1 on your list was caused by number 2. The first year our boom did actually what you desribed maybe not as bad. The tech came out several times and tried some things and it seem to improve. However, at the start of this year, it was so bad we had to run the sprayer with the autoboom off. Tech made several more visits and it took some new software to make it work right. And for the rest of the season we never had a problem. And we haven't had a problem with the rest of the sprayer like you have described. My neighbor who is all red bought a 4830 last year after riding in ours and so far his has been flawless too. No boom issues or anything. Sounds like you got a lemon.

We had a 07 4730 and had some of the same problems you have had. Our boom ends have been replaced twice from cracking, have brocken the pins in the boom where it folds, to many 0 rings replaced to keep track of, rubbed hydraulic lines blowing, to many to even guess at, have spent almost a $1000 on oil because of all the leaks and hoses blowing, but get the same story that ours is the only one. Our boom trac worked very well, just a few software updates when there was a problem and always seemed to fix any little problem we did have. It worked much better than our norac ever did. We got so fed up with all the downtime with it we ended up trading it off for a 2010, 4730. If this was our first jd sprayer it would be our last. I hope we just got a lemon, as our other jd sprayers we have owned in the past had very few problems at all, and were more than happy with them.

The early 30 series sprayers had a poor outer boom design. I had to install a "PIP" Product Improvment Program for the 4830's with 100 foot booms. THey welded gussets in and also installed a suport plate next to the hinge point. I see the new 100' booms come with the updated end sections.

As far as the boomtrac there was a GREATLY improved software update that actually fixed the vast majority of issues.

Also there is a fix as fail "pip" to the roll suspention on the 30 series sprayers that gives you better springs and shocks so the boom doesn't roll up and down so easily and that REALLY helped keep the ends out of the ground.

Are there any diagnostic codes? I had one do that and it was the cam position sensor under the injection pump. If there are any codes let me know and I can look them up and help you out more.

They came out and did updates in are 4830 WAY better now the boom trac is a whole new thing. They welded and put supports brackets on. The mech. told us if you have one of the first ones off the line, It could be 7 hours to do all the updates.
