No matter how many precautions or provisions are made to ensure capable towing (HD hitch, dolly wheels, etc.), there is no current combine frame or chassis, or, drive-train especially designed to withstand prolonged operation while towing a large square baler, whose empty weight exceeds 18-20,000lbs (20 - 24,000lbs with bales), no matter what the ground conditions are like.

3x4 bales are weighing 1200 Lbs at around 20-25% moisture cobs. Once they got the flake count up, the integrity of the bale drastically improved. We are currently trying different stack configurations to see which stands best and stores best.

That's a good point, Muddy.
I'm wondering where the HP for this is coming from. Apparently, the combine still uses the same engine as one without a baler. Sounds to me like you'd be going a lot slower?

Agco's 3x4 baler is pulling 90 HP from the combine so horsepower is somewhat of an issue. They are saying the new 2011 Challenger combine will address these issues. One Agco machine also has rear wheel assist which helps when traveling through soft ground. As far as the hitch, there are more than one design. On one combine the hitch runs the full length of the undercarriage of the combine and connects to both the front and rear of the combine. These are also specially designed balers from the ground up with the tongue and pickup attachment eliminated so they weigh slightly less than a typical baler.

90 HP is about right for 4' x 3' which must be single axle, combine must have RWA (or PRA) and not runing a chopper or spreader saves power. check out www.glenvarbaledirect.com.au A boggy corn field is not like an Aussie wheat paddock where the combination was developed and is now well proven. Most balers used to date are Hesston and they can be converted back to standard for hay baling.

I think iflylow was trying to say the baler has a powered axle making the system 6 wheel drive? Power requirements should be lower than normal baling because the throughput is much lower and you are running half of the normal baler ground speed. I agree with moylie that there should be some offset by not having a chopper, maybe as much as 50 hp.
